Education and Employment
Education is considered a social determinant of family health and is expected to add to the health and property of individuals and families.
Immigrants are the most highly educated group in the Families First Edmonton (FFE) study, yet are the most likely to be underemployed. FFE Canadian-born Aboriginals with post-secondary credentials are the most likely to be appropriately employed. However, many highly-skilled jobs filled by Aboriginals are low in pay.
Surprisingly, many FFE families have post-secondary education, but may still be experiencing poverty.
