The Research

Families First Edmonton (FFE) research began with a compelling question:

How can governments, organizations and agencies meet the needs of low income families in a way that works best for families, is cost effective and results in better family outcomes?

The Families First Edmonton study is unique in social services because FFE is using Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) Research instead of program evaluation.

FFE chose to use RCT, the gold standard of research, to ensure decision makers view FFE research as reliable and valid. When the FFE study concludes, it will show what approaches and practices lead to better outcomes for which families.

University of Alberta researchers, using accepted RCT protocols and standards, followed 1270 families for up to two years of service interventions. Researchers continue to follow up with families for an additional three years to determine longer term outcomes.

The Families

Participation was voluntary. Eligible families were invited to participate if they:

  • Had at least one child aged 12 years and under
  • Lived in the City of Edmonton
  • Received Income Support OR Alberta Child Health Benefit Program OR Alberta Adult Health Benefit Program OR used City of Edmonton Leisure Access Program OR lived in Capital Region Housing

Families contacted FFE directly to sign up for the research project.

All families continued to access any services they already did, upon being accepted into the project.
