Baseline research data is currently available that provides snapshots about the life circumstances of Families First Edmonton (FFE) families. This data includes specific determinants of health such as employment and education, social supports and housing.

The following presentations can be used now to provide further insight into the complexities of families living on low income. The Fact Sheets describe baseline FFE data and explore potential implications of the data for service delivery and policy making.

NOTE: Final research results are anticipated in 2012. That's when FFE will be able to report the findings and answer the study questions (see Research Study Questions section).

• Who are the FFE Families | October 2010

• Who are the families who volunteered for the study? Through a description of their circumstances, systems and helpers can identify gaps or problem areas in their services that may be creating barriers for families, or could be improved to provide better access to families.

• Fast Facts: Who are the FFE Families | May 2011

• This fact sheet paints a picture of the 1200 volunteer families who participated in the FFE Research, including demographic and family structure information.

• Fast Facts: English Proficiency of FFE Foreign Born | June 2011

• Language proficiency is an important part of newcomers' economic, social and political adjustment to their new country. Most FFE foreign born primary caregivers reported a fairly high level of English proficiency, but a minority needed interpretation assistance to participate in the program.

• Education and Employment | October 2010

• Educational profiles of FFE families are diverse. This PowerPoint shows the relationship between families' educational levels and employment.

• Fast Facts: Education | April 2011

• Families First Edmonton caregivers born in Canada have lower educational attainment than city averages while those born outside of Canada have high levels of education if foreign credentials are considered. This fast fact sheet provides an overview of preliminary data findings.

• Working conditions are an important social determinant of health because of the great amount of time we spend in our workplaces. This fact sheet explores the employment situation of FFE caregivers.

• Housing: Core Housing Need including Crowding, State of Repair and Affordability | June 2011

• One quarter of FFE families are living in crowded homes, with refugee families more likely to live in crowded homes than immigrant, Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal FFE families. One out of every five FFE families live in places requiring major repairs to plumbing, electrical wiring, and/or structural repairs to walls, floors, or ceilings.

• This fact sheet identifies the core housing issues facing FFE families, including crowding, state of repair and affordability issues.

• Compares the similarities and differences between FFE families and other Alberta families in terms of their composition, healthy functioning and parental wellbeing.

• Fast Facts: Family Functioning and Primary Caregiver Health | June 2011

• Family functioning refers to the processes families engage in to achieve goals, address challenges, and support and enhance individual familly members' health and development. On the whole, FFE families are well functioning.

• Barriers to Participation and Perceived Social Support | May 2011

• FFE caregivers identify their top barriers to participation and their perceptions of the social support they receive from others.

• Fast Facts: Barriers to Community Participation | June 2011

• Participation in community events and activities is health-enhancing, however, research suggests that people living on low incomes are less likely to participate in community events, and that numerous barriers may account for their limited participation. This fast fact sheet provides an overview of preliminary data findings of the participation barriers for Families First Edmonton caregivers.

• Recreational Activities and Behavioural Assessment of FFE Focus Children|June 2011

• This PowerPoint focuses on child engagement in seven recreation activities that we might reasonably expect to be influenced by the FFE interventions - either recreation or comprehensive programs. The second part focuses on measures of social and emotional behaviour and development, using parent and child ratings. PowerPoint notes provide details and general observations.

• Putting the Research to Work Report|December 2011

• This report compiles baseline data on low income families and FFE partner perspectives on their experiences over the past year and a half as we put the research to work. It documents the changes that are already occurring within, and across systems, as a result of being involved in this community based research project.
